| Afghanistan:
High Security Alert
An
aid group has suspended its work in Afghanistan - after 20 years
- following the killing of three female aid workers in an ambush
near Kabul. British-Canadian Dr Jacqueline Kirk, Canadian Shirley
Case and Nicole Dial, a Trinidadian-American, were shot with their
Afghan driver Mohammad Aimal. The International Rescue Committee
(IRC) workers had been driving to the capital from Gardez in the
south-east.

Pakistan:
High Security Alert,
Police in Pakistan say they are investigating two loud explosions
heard in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. The cause and location
of the blasts is not clear, but officials say all "sensitive installations"
are safe. Some reports say at least one of the explosions took
place in the nearby city of Rawalpindi, 12km (seven miles) from
the capital city.

Turkey
(Security report from Istanbul)
At
least 16 people have been killed and 154 wounded in two explosions
in the Turkish city of Istanbul, in what officials say was a terrorist
attack. The first blast occurred in a rubbish bin in the busy
Gungoren residential area. The second, larger explosion occurred
as crowds gathered. No group has claimed responsibility, but security
services said the attack bore the hallmarks of Kurdish rebels.

| Iraq:

At least six people have been killed in
a car bomb attack against Shia pilgrims in Baghdad, Iraqi officials
say. At least 10 people were injured in the blast in the capital.
It is the latest in a number of recent attacks on Shia pilgrims
heading to the holy city of Karbala to mark the birth date of
a 9th Century Shia imam. On Thursday, 18 people died after a female
attacker blew herself up while among a group of pilgrims in the
town of Iskandariya, south of Baghdad.

Lanka (Security report from Colombo)
The
BBC's Roland Buerk in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, looks at
why journalists and human rights activists there are so angry.
The police dragged barricades across the road, blocking the route
to President Mahinda Rajapaksa's office. Wearing black armbands,
journalists and human rights activists said the freedom of the
press had been undermined as the war continues between the government
and the separatist Tamil Tigers (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam).
