RWANDA - HIGH RISK SECURITY ALERT
A journalist working for a private newspaper has been shot dead in front of his house in the Rwandan capital. Witnesses say Jean Leonard Rugambage, the acting editor of Umuvugizi newspaper, was fired on by two men who then fled in a car. The authorities had recently suspended the paper, prompting it to start publishing online instead.

Pakistan: High Security Alert,
A suspected suicide bomber has killed at least 12 people in an attack on a checkpoint in north-west Pakistan, officials say. A number of people were also injured when the bomber attacked the checkpoint in Khar, the main town in the troubled Bajaur tribal region. Pakistani security forces have been battling militants in the Khar area. Government officials said on Friday that at least 24 suspected militants had been killed in the fighting.

Afghanistan: High Security Alert - REFER TO SECURITY WARNING
Ten people are reported to have been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province. One account said the victims were civilians at a New Year's celebration, killed as a bomber targeted an army convoy in the area. One official said nine people had been injured in the explosion in Gereshk district, AFP news agency reported.

Iraq: .(Security Risk: High)
Three large explosions have gone off in quick succession in the centre of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. One of the blasts was near the Iranian embassy, while the other two were in the west-central Mansour district of the city. It is not clear if there are any casualties or what caused the explosions. They shattered a period of relative calm after last month's parliamentary elections.

Somalia - HIGH RISK - MEDIA Targetted
Three foreign aid workers from the Action Against Hunger group have been kidnapped in Kenya and taken across the border into Somalia, officials said. About 10 gunmen crossed from Somalia to abduct the workers from the border town of Mandera. Residents said two of the staff were from Zimbabwe and Pakistan, while the third was listed as European. Kidnappings are not uncommon in the region and most of the people abducted are released unharmed.
